Tips to Launch Your Career at USAA

USAA
As part of a partnership with the Maricopa Community Colleges and USAA, we hosted a webinar featuring Gay Meyer, USAA Vice President of HR. Gay shared a little bit about herself and her path to the company as well as some insightful information about work and life at USAA—so much great information that we knew we had to share it beyond those who were able to watch the webinar live.

While it’s tough to capture all of the unique aspects of life at USAA in a single blog post, I’ve put together a recap of some of the highlights from this presentation. Whether you’re considering a career with USAA, or just interested in learning more about one of the Valley’s top employers, I think you’ll be impressed with everything USAA has to offer.

Here are the 10 biggest takeaways from yesterday's webinar:

1. They serve 11.7 million members, 98% of whom stay with USAA year after year.

USAA is a financial services company that serves military members and their families. As a USAA member who has always had exceptional experiences with the company, it comes as no surprise to me that a majority of members feel the same way as I do. Still, I was shocked to see just how many satisfied members there are!

2. Their secret to success? Their employees.

It’s no accident that USAA has so many loyal, satisfied members. According to Gay, this is a result of the company hiring the “world’s best employees” and then giving them the tools they need to be happy and successful in their roles.

3. They’re recognized locally and nationally for their superior service and unique company culture.

USAA has earned a number of national recognitions including being named a FORTUNE® World’s Most Admired Company, the No. 1 Best for Vets Employer by the Military Times, and the No. 1 Military-Friendly Employer by G.I. Jobs. Locally, USAA was named a 2016 Most Admired Company by BestCompaniesAZ and is in the running for several other awards this year including Healthiest Employers.

4. They offer incredible benefits to their employees.

USAA goes above and beyond when it comes to employee benefits. USAA employees enjoy generous amounts of paid time off, comprehensive wellness programs, basic life insurance, a potential for performance-based bonuses, and more. USAA also provides an 8 percent match on 401K contributions!

5. They provide education assistance from Day 1.

While education assistance is technically an employee benefit, I felt like this one needed a takeaway of its own because it’s huge! Unlike many employers that only provide education assistance to employees who have been with the company for a certain amount of time, USAA employees (both full-time and part-time) are eligible for this benefit from day one.

6. They give their employees what they need to live a healthy lifestyle.

One of the aspects of life at USAA that really stood out to me was how committed they are to their employees’ health and well-being. USAA’s Phoenix campus includes an onsite 24/7 fitness center, intramural sports, an onsite cafeteria and Starbucks, and peaceful garden rooms where their employees can unwind during breaks. The campus also features a childcare center and access to “helpers,” who can run errands for employees for a small fee, to ensure all of their needs are met.

7. They have several hundred positions available in the Phoenix area.

USAA employs more than 4,000 people in the Valley, and they’re looking to add several hundred more to their Phoenix team in the next year. Most of these jobs fall into four main categories—Auto Insurance Sales and Service Representative, Mortgage Processor, Auto Adjuster, and Bodily Injury Professional—but there are many other positions as well.

8. Military service counts as experience for most positions.

Most positions at USAA require at least 1-2 years experience in sales or customer service; however, to make it easier for veterans to join their team, any successful completion of military service takes the place of this requirement. With this emphasis on hiring veterans, it’s no surprise that 1 in 5 employees are either veterans or military spouses.

9. They provide extensive, paid training to make sure their employees have the tools they need to succeed.

At USAA, employees undergo weeks of paid training to ensure they feel confident in their roles. But it’s not just about making sure they understand the requirements of their position. USAA also focuses on ensuring their employees understand their members as well. That’s why the first three days of training are dedicated entirely to understanding military culture. As someone who is part of a military family, it’s exciting to see a company dedicating themselves to learning more about my life and how to best serve my family.

10. They look for employees that want to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

At the end of the webinar, an attendee asked Gay what she looks for when reviewing resumes. Her answer was simple. She looks for people who are truly passionate about USAA’s mission, “people who want to give back to something bigger than themselves,” she said.
