Why Leadership Development Matters

Leadership has a direct and lasting impact on employee motivation, engagement, and retention. About 94% of employees would stay with a company that invests in their development. Yet, only 10% of new leaders receive formal leadership training before taking on their role. During the presentation, attendees reflected on a powerful reality: leadership skill gaps are rarely intentional. More often, leaders are promoted for technical expertise without being equipped for the realities of managing people.

Common gaps discussed included communication, emotional intelligence, employee development, conflict management, change management, and strategic decision-making. These gaps can affect team morale, productivity, and an organization’s ability to adapt in times of change.

Closing the Leadership Skill Gap

The conversation then turned toward solutions. Effective leadership development is not a one-time event. It requires intentional investment and a commitment to growth. Three core strategies stood out:

  • Targeted training that focuses on real-world leadership challenges

  • Mentoring and coaching to support leaders as they apply new skills

  • Continuous learning that evolves alongside organizational needs

Attendees were invited to reflect on which leadership skill gap, if addressed, would have the greatest impact within their own organizations, prompting thoughtful dialogue at every table.

Strengthening Managerial Effectiveness

Strong managers do more than supervise. They coach, inspire, and build trust. Participants explored what truly effective leadership looks like in practice, from communicating with clarity and emotional intelligence to leading with empathy and consistency.

A key takeaway centered on emotional intelligence. Leaders who understand their own emotions and recognize the emotions of others are better equipped to navigate conflict, motivate teams, and create psychologically safe workplaces.

Leading Through Change with Confidence

Change is often the only constant in today’s workplace. During the event, leaders reflected on how employees look to them for clarity, confidence, and calm, especially in times of uncertainty.

The session highlighted practical ways leaders can guide their teams through change, including modeling resilience, communicating consistently, acknowledging challenges, and celebrating small wins. Attendees also examined different responses to change and discussed how leaders can move employees from resistance to engagement.

Frameworks such as Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model sparked conversation around building momentum, empowering advocates, and sustaining progress.

Re-Engaging Teams with Purpose

The final portion of the presentation focused on re-engagement and trust. Leaders were encouraged to reconnect employees to the organization’s mission and purpose, recognize contributions, address conflict early, and foster a culture of belonging.

Trust emerged as a central theme, built through honest, clear, empathetic, and accountable communication. These principles resonated strongly during table discussions as participants shared practical approaches they plan to implement with their teams.

This Impact Breakfast reinforced a simple but powerful message: great leaders are grown through learning, reflection, and practice.
